The limit is pretty much what they can take, physically and mentally and how deep they are connected to their source of power (I'll explain that in the comic later). So the limits are different for each individual. Ildrei are power hungry though, there's many that have killed them self or gone mad by pushing themselves beyond their own limits. There is also a a number of deformed ildrei, modifications that have gone wrong or have gotten out of hand.
So in short, it depends on the individual's physical and mental strength and the capabilities of the mage/doctor.
